Just three of the eight who set out for the Coolmore N.H. Sires Maiden Hunters Chase managed to complete the course, with Oscar Contender coming out on top under James Hannon.
Successful on his last two starts 'between the flags', the Harry Kelly trained seven-year-old was sent off an 11/2 chance this afternoon on his first racecourse start.
Settled in mid-division, the bay victor took closer order from seven out and held a definite advantage as they entered the straight for the final time.
He was pressed and headed by Macs Legend before the last, however he battled back gamely under pressure on the run-in, going on to score by a length.
The runner-up was returned at 5/1 under Johnny Barry for trainer Gerard Kelleher, while Sizingdowntherhine (9/2) was the only other finisher, forty lengths back in third with Derek O'Connor aboard for Jim Dreaper. Murdo Mackenzie was sent off the 11/4 favourite and he disappointingly pulled up.
