Flyer overcomes blunder to win at Tipperary

Sun 18th Jul 2010, 15:30

Pom Flyer under Barry Geraghty, overcame some alarming jumping errors, in particular at the final fence, to win the Packie Downey Memorial Chase at Tipperary today, claiming his first chase win at his 16th attempt.

Pom Flyer moved to the front when making a blunder three out, jumped badly left at the next, and with the race at his mercy, blundered badly when getting his 'wires crossed' with Geraghty at the final fence. Geraghty, mirroring his ride on Kicking King in the King George Chase in 2004, clung to his mount (to his own credit he stayed on his feet) and the pair recovering to record a ten lengths win over Hairy Molly

Winning trainer Francis Flood was represented by his son Fran who stated "I'm delighted to have finally won a chase with Pom Flyer - Tipperary's tight track suits him better than the likes of Punchestown and Leopardstown."

He added "we actually had him put out on grass recently but brought him in after four days after we saw the conditions for this race. We'll aim him at Listowel next maybe as it is a similar track to here."
