Favourite Patriot gets job done in Thurles opener

Ex Patriot (13/8 into 11/8) justified favouritism in the opening Templemore Beginners Chase at Thurles for Ellmarie Holden and Derek O'Connor.
The outcome was still in the balance when Arvico Bleu (7/4 out to 9/4) departed at the last and Ex Patriot then went to account for Benruben (20/1) by a length. Benruben made a mistake and was hampered at the last.
"I was a slight bit concerned about the ground this morning but we said we'd chance it," said Miss Holden.
"He ran well his first few times over fences and today was the plan to win a beginners' and we'll make a plan in a week or two and see how he comes out of it tomorrow.
"It's great to get his head in front and Derek said there was plenty left at the last (when Arvico Bleu fell). Derek knows him inside out and comes in to ride out once or twice a week."
P. Townend, rider of Dolciano Dici (FR) trained by W.P. Mullins, reported to the Clerk of Scales that his mount made mistakes at the last three fences.
