Defining edges verdict for Carroll
Defining Year stuck his head out in the closing stages to land the Gabriel Curran Memorial Madrid Handicap at the Curragh. Adilapour made a bid for home over two furlongs out in a competitive event but was strongly pressed by top-weight Defining Year inside the final furlong.
Gary Carroll got a good tune from his mount who edged the verdict close home.
The race was named in honour of former jockey Gabriel 'Squibs' Curran, who rode Nebbiolo to win the 1976 2,000 Guineas.
"I'm delighted to win that as I was mad keen on Squibs," said winning trainer Mick Halford.
"He travelled well through the ground and has strengthened up over the winter. We'll go for a Guineas trial with him."
