Bygone Age takes Curragh opener
The Dermot Weld trained Bygone Age defied a testing draw in stall 24 to deny the odds on Bass Rock in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden over six-furlongs.
In the hands of Pat Smullen and the colours of Dr Ronan Lambe, the gelded son of Whipper was well supported to score at the fourth time of asking and may head to Naas next weekend.
"He battled very well and was given a very strong ride by the pilot," Dermot Weld said afterwards.
"He is consistent and we will go for a nursery next, and it is quite possible we will go for the Birdcatcher as six-furlong nursery's are hard to find and he is a fit and consistent horse.
"The draw was a concern but I am very happy with him."
The win brings Ireland's champion jockey Pat Smullen on to 79 winners for the season, three clear of Johnny Murtagh in the race to be crowned this years champion.
