The Alan Fleming trained Bolbec sprang a surprise in the opener at Cork this evening, the Doneraile GAA Goes Racing Maiden Hurdle.

Twice successful on the level in France, the son of Le Harve failed to make an impact on his first two starts in Ireland.

As short as 14/1 in early shows, the bay gelding proved friendless with punters, opening on-course at 25s before going off a 33/1 chance in the colours of owner Barry Connell.

Settled in mid-division, he took closer order down the back straight, and was fourth from four out.

He travelled best in second approaching two out, hitting the front at the last, before stretching clear to win by six lengths. Uncle Henry who was returned at 9/4, finished second under JJ Slevin for Joseph O'Brien, while the 5/6 favourite Jerandme was another eight lengths back in third.

O'Regan said afterwards: "He has been a bit disappointing albeit his first run wasn't too bad.

"They went very quick there and it suited to come through and pass horses. He is learning and maybe better ground suits, as it is very fast."
