Betty gives Ryan his first winner
Betty Is A Lady sprang a 20/1 surprise for jockey Brian O’Connell & trainer Diarmuid Ryan in the second race on the card, the Goresbridge Maiden Hurdle.
The 7yo Rudimentary mare won a point to point back in April '09 but had shown very little since then until her last start at Punchestown where she finished a close fourth behind Avondhu Lady.
O’Connell took the lead at the second last and the winner responded well to his urgings to beat off all challengers to win by a comfortable five lengths at the finish.
The well supported 2/1fav He’s A Delight flew home to take second after finding trouble in running before the straight under Paul Townend with a further ½ length back to Fourth Class in third.
It was the trainer, who is based in Kilmacthomas, Co Waterford, first winner on the racecourse.
