Ex-Ballydoyle trained Autocrat (15/2) made a winning handicap start at Dundalk today, landing the Dundalk Winter Series Championship Handicap for new connections trainer Denis Hogan and owner Justin Carthy.
Twice unplaced for champion trainer Aidan O'Brien before selling for 42,000gns last October, the three year old colt today overcame bumping in home straight to lead near the line, for a head success under Joey Sheridan.
The Group 1-winning rider said "I didn't break the best but I actually ended up getting a lovely position tracking the favourite. It felt like we walked and it then turned into a sprint. In fairness, he did well as he was having to quicken at a sprinting finish.
"I think coming through horses is what gave him that bit of an edge.”
He added "Denis (Hogan) has done a good job with him because he is obviously by No Nay Never and they are not really certain to stay this trip (1m2f, 150yds). He has sweetened him up and has done well with him at home.
"It is nice to ride a winner in these silks for Justin (Carthy) who is a good owner to have in the yard - I think he has seven or eight horses there now. Justin and Denis do well together with these horses and he could be a good buy.”
