Rainforest runs riot for Weld
Rainforest Magic ran out a convincing winner of the two-mile Topaz Handicap to give Dermot Weld his second winner of the Galway festival.
Pat Smullen kicked for home turning in on the Montjeu gelding and he powered clear for a four-and-a-half length victory. Striking Force gave chase in vain as he claimed the runner-up spot ahead of Wee Giant Dorset Square was sent off the 7/2 favourite but only beat two home.
The 5/1 winner holds four entries for later in the week but Weld stated that he wouldn't want the ground any faster if he was to turn out again.
"He got a nice ride from Pat. This is always a competitive handicap," said Weld.
"He got a run down the hill and the gaps came for him. He came up the hill well.
"He doesn't want it too firm. That's about as fast as he wants it. He likes nice good summer ground.
"It's just on the fast side of good. Across the far side it's lovely but on the hill and round the bend it's getting quicker.
"It's drying rapidly with the sunny evening and we'll see what the week brings.
"He's in a couple of places but if he was to come back it would be for the amateur handicap hurdle on Friday- with Robbie (McNamara) riding."
Winning owner Dr Ronan Lambe added:- "We bought this lad to win the Derby - not a Galway handicap! But it's all appreciated."
