Memorable day for Mags as Cairdin takes the last
The 7/4 shot Cairdin became the sixth favourite of the day to score, as he took the last race on the card, the Guinness Storehouse Bumper, giving his trainer Mags Mullins her first ever double.
The winning son of Accordion, who's name translates to Accordion in Irish, made the early running under Patrick Mullins (who was recording his first winner of the season), but was headed a mile from home.
He was pushed along over four furlongs out but responded well to pressure to dispute the lead with three furlongs to go. He soon hit the front again and stayed on best under continued pressure to score by a four lengths from Law Rebel (10/3) back in second.
Cairdin was the third son of Accordion (who is now the leading sire at this year's Festival) to score at Galway so far this week following the success of both Catch The Moment and Blazing Tempo yesterday.
Winning trainer Mags Mullins said afterwards: "That's my first double as a trainer and it's lovely to have it here. We have no plans for him now, but he will probably go novice hurdling but I'll have to discuss it with his owners.
"He is bred to stay and will get two and a half miles in time. He should have no trouble in getting further."
