Galway Plate entries trimmed to 32

The Galway Plate contender list has been reduced to 32 at the entry stage, with two of Ireland's top handlers responsible for more than half of that number.

Gordon Elliott has as many as 10 contenders left, the Cullentra handler bidding to win the Plate for a record fifth time, with all of his wins coming since 2016.

Willie Mullins meanwhile leaves seven in the mix as he looks to add to the Ballybrit wins of Blazing Tempo (2011) and Royal Rendezvous (2021).

Favourite Nurburgring remains solid

The Joseph O'Brien-trained Nurburgring turned last year's Galway Hurdle into something of a procession and the five-year-old retains his grip on the market for the Plate following the entries.

Nurburgring is a general 9/2 chance with most firms. He has been quite lightly-raced since winning at Ballybrit last summer.

It took a while for him to warm to jumping fences but he was a very creditable fourth behind next-time-out Grade 1 winner Caldwell Potter in the novices' handicap chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

He built on that to win at Killarney in a beginners' event earlier this month, having finished second in a Royal Ascot handicap on the Flat in between times.

Elliott retains strong hand

The Elliott mob at this point remains strong. Chemical Energy Down Memory Lane Duffle Coat Shecouldbeanything The Goffer and Three Card Brag are all possible contenders.

Three Card Brag was well touted in many quarters for the Grand National at Aintree and ran well for a long way before finishing 11th.

His trainer felt he didn't see out the trip and is hopeful of a big run.

"Three Card Brag just didn't get home the last day (Aintree), he'll come back in trip and I think the race could suit him," Elliott told the Nick Luck Daily podcast.

"I do (feel he's got a big race in him), I was discussing him with Jack (Kennedy, jockey) and this bit of nicer ground might suit him. The trip could suit him as well and he jumps very well.

"He likes being ridden up on the front end which could suit Galway so he's definitely one of our leading players. I'd imagine we'll put cheekpieces on again."

Mullins with plenty of options

The champion trainer has seven remaining options for the €162,000 top prize at Galway. Blood Destiny (152) is the highest-rated Closutton contender and justified cramped odds at Listowel in June over 2m3f when last spotted. He should see out the extra distance at Galway. Lisnagar Fortune Olympic Man — in the same ownership as Galopin Des Champs — and the mares Arctic Fly and Zenta are other potential runners for Mullins.

Zenta was disappointing at Roscommon in June in a three-runner event but that came on good ground and any rain that falls at Galway between now and Wednesday would only be a positive for the JP McManus-owned six-year-old as she relished some dig underfoot.

Top trainers with chances

Duel Cheltenham Festival winner Jazzy Matty for Cian Collins joins the likes of Gavin Cromwell's Thecompanysergeant and Amirite for Henry De Bromhead in featuring near the head of affairs for the Galway Plate.

Alongside Nurburgring, Joseph O'Brien also has Common Practice in the melting pot, the Gleneagles gelding being one of three potential McManus-owned contenders alongside the aforementioned Zenta and Down Memory Lane.
