Dazzling Darren served up a 25/1 surprise in the extended mile and three handicap that concluded Galway's card.

The four-year-old gelding led early under Robert Whearty with Pak Army in close attendance. Pak Army ran freely and moved into the lead with over five furlongs to travel.

He was clear half a mile out but Dazzling Darren was ridden to cut into the deficit with less than two furlongs to negotiate.

He got his measure racing past the furlong pole and was strong at the finish as he went on by a length and three quarters. Crassus (11/2) led home the placed horses in second from Magnetic North (8/1) and Hurricane Alex (20/1).

“That was great. It was very difficult from that draw and in fairness he got out well and went forward. It worked out great,” said Gavin Cromwell.

“Robert is a good young lad and his 10lb is valuable in these types of handicaps.

“I'm delighted for his owner Darren Cahill, he'd love having a winner here.”

The Stewards requested a report from Gavin Cromwell, trainer as to the apparent improvement in form of Dazzling Darren, placed first, as compared with its recent run. Gavin Cromwell reported that his mount was freshened up after a break and the undulations of the track suited his charge which may have accounted for the apparent improvement in form. Having considered the evidence the Stewards noted the explanations given.
