Promising newcomer Clounmacon almost got to her, but front-running Vernet ran out a deserving victor of Barberstown Castle Irish EBF Fillies Maiden at the Curragh.
With the benefit of a run under her belt, Vernet (16/1) for Joseph O’Brien and Declan McDonogh, clung on by a nose, with Ballydoyle’s 11/8 favourite Unless three parts of a length back in third.
“She's a good hardy filly. She had a good run first time, over five-and-a-half, in a good maiden and we thought when she went seven she'd show some progress,” said O'Brien.
“She had to be tough there today. It was very close, just a bob of the heads. It's great to win a maiden with her.
“We'll head for some black-type now. I thought she showed plenty of pace so I wouldn't be against coming back to six with her.”
R.L. Moore, rider of Unless (USA) trained by A.P.O'Brien, reported to the Clerk of the Scales that his mount ran green.
The Stewards reviewed an incident at around the 2 furlong marker involving Eternal Silence (USA), ridden by S. Foley, and Unless (USA), ridden by R.L. Moore where it appeared both horses made contact briefly. Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the matter, the Stewards were satisfied that no further action was warranted.
