Affogato is certainly a filly on the up and followed up her maiden win at Gowran Park earlier this season by taking Thepowdercoaters.ie Race in fine style at Fairyhouse.
This seven-furlong event was reduced to just three runners after both Confident Star (stone bruise) and Velocidad (temperature) were ruled out and Shane Foley switched to ride Ace Aussie San Andreas was sent off the evens favourite to repeat a win in this corresponding race 12 months ago and was prominent throughout along with Ace Aussie.
Colin Keane bided his time on Affogato before switching out the 11/8 chance around the two-furlong pole and she quickened up nicely on the outer.
The Ray Grehan-owned daughter of Requinto stayed on strongly inside the final furlong to record a comfortable four-and-a-quarter lengths victory over the favourite, with Ace Aussie dropping away over seven lengths further back in third.
Winning trainer Ger Lyons said, “She’s only 380 kilos but if they all had her heart they would be racehorses.
“She’s a sweetheart and tries so hard. I’m not going to change the shape of her but look at her attitude. I might just get a bit of black type with her.
“We know she wants softer ground so the future is bright. The only negative is her physique but she has everything else going for her.”
