Noel Meade unleashed a talented sort in the two mile bumper at Kilbeggan when Devils Paintbrush won comfortably to justify 9/4 favouritism.
Nina Carberry was always travelling sweetly on the five-year-old and she waited until the final furlong to pick off Carrig Rua Lady (16/1) by four lengths. Bedrock Lady had challenged Carrig Rua Lady first, but wasn’t able to go by and she was a length and a quarter further down in third at 5/2 for Willie and Patrick Mullins.
Noel Meade, who saddled a double at Kilbeggan courtesy of Six Stone Ned in the fifth race, said: “I’d say he’s quite a nice horse. He did it very well, very easily.
“He had a few little problems and being by Shantou we waited for good ground with him.
“He’ll go for a winners’ bumper. He’s schooled well over jumps. He’s a full brother to a horse Christy Roche had called Touch Back and they thought a bit of him.”
Devils Paintbrush’s dam Back Log was second in a Listed race for Jim Bolger in Tipperary in June 1998.
