Hughes goes down memory lane after Sun Disc win
A fortnight on from her hurdling success at the course, Sun Disc turned the Derrinstown Stud Apprentice Handicap at Down Royal into a procession under Mark Enright.
The Dessie Hughes-trained daughter of Noverre was clearly coasting along from some way out and once sent about her business with under two furlongs to go, the rest were battling it out for minor money. There was market support for The Drunker Dr (13/2 into 5/1) and he kept on for second, five and a half lengths adrift of the winner whilst the pace-setting Llew Law (in first time cheek-pieces) kept going for third.
Hughes trains Sun Disc for John Purfield and he said: "It's nice to win a flat race for John. I'd say the last flat winner we had together was Dellersbeck (1981) in the Lincoln ridden by Wally Swinburn.
"We'll see what mark this filly gets over hurdles and what she goes up for winning tonight. A winners of one hurdle might be difficult enough for her.
"Mark claims 7 and that'd be useful if we go on the flat again."
