The concluding Crowne Plaza Leading Jockey & Trainer Maiden at Dundalk served up an exciting finish and it was Carvelas that came good at the eighteenth attempt.
With Ray Dawson in the plate, the Cape Cross gelding edged out Sceilg Oscilate Wildly and Tobair An Sheeda by a neck, half a length and a nose with just a further length back to the gambled-on favourite Shaiyzar (9/4, from around 7s this morning) in fifth.
Michael Butler has care of Carvelas for owner/breeder George Grothier and he said: "He's a long time at it. If ever a horse needed a win it was him.
"I'd suppose he'll go hurdling in the spring or summer.
"He might get another run here in a fortnight's time if the handicapper isn't too hard on him.
"He's very high in the ratings but we might run him in a handicap." (GC & EM)
