Beacon springs surprise to open account
Blazing Beacon sprang a 25/1 shock when wearing down The Hurl on the run-in to claim the Punchestown Event Centre Maiden Hurdle.
Alain Cawley had his mount in front early before settling behind the leaders. He came with a strong run after the last to record a length-and-a-quarter victory.
"This is my racecourse - I love this one," said trainer Frank McGuinness, who has a high strike rate at the course.
"This is the first day we've had him right and he runs well fresh. He's really a chaser and I count this as a bonus.
"We wanted a fast pace and they probably went a bit fast but Alain Cawley did exactly as he was told and got a breather into him. He probably wants a bit further.
"He might have one more try over hurdles, there is a race in Wexford for him where I am chairman of the race supporters committee.
"He's a half brother to Blazing Sky, who was one of the best I've ever had."
