Akasaka goes one place better a week on
The biggest field of the evening, with thirteen runners, lined up for the Fernleigh Handicap with the well backed favourite (5/1 into 10/3 on track), Akasaka coming out on top for trainer Eddie Lynam with Joseph O’Brien aboard.
Second over the course and distance on his handicap debut last Thursday evening the winning son of King's Best managed to go one place better tonight.
He tracked the leaders in third for most of the race before quickening to lead a furlong from home. He was ridden clear from there and kept on well to score. Casela Park (5/1) for Jaclyn Tyrrell with Fran Berry aboard finished a length and three parts back in second with Adam's Return under Padraig Beggy for Bill Farrell(5/1) a further length and three parts back in third.
Winning trainer Eddie Lynam said afterwards: "He is named after a Japanese restaurant and thank God he won't be ending up in one, as he has a bit of ability!
"We needed that as we have had a lot of second's and third's recently.
"The horses have being running well but we have had around three times more second and third's than winners."
