The David Nagle trained 9/4 favourite Maarek could only manage a disappointing third in the Group 3 chrisbeekracing.com Stakes at Newbury this afternoon.

The Colm O’Donoghue ridden gelding was well fancied to obliged today with the ground in his favour and after winning a Group 3 at Newcastle last time out.

Having raced in rear for much of the six furlong contest he made headway over a furlong out but it was too little too late as Soul for Saeed Bin Suroor and Silvestre De Sousa had drawn clear and went on to score by four lengths at the odds of 3/1.

The William Haggas trained Firebeam was second at 5/1 while Maarek was a further length and a quarter back in third.
