He’s a horse with any amount of ability. He’s had a few problems, but we seem to have ironed them out now and hopefully he can keep going. We’ve changed the tactics with him and he’s more relaxed. Denis is the man for that job and gets on very well with him. It’s hard to watch but you have to let him at it. Denis said they flew which probably suited him and he was able to stay on. He has loads of pace and stays the two miles very well. I’d say we’ll go for the Galway Hurdle now. That’s my biggest win and I’m from Kerry so it’s great to get it here.

You’d be looking for improvement when he settles and gets a cleaner round of jumping. He could be a fair horse and he’ll obviously be dual-purpose. He was going well in the autumn and Willie threw him out and gave him a break. I’m sure he’ll go for novice hurdles at Fairyhouse and Punchestown.

After his fall in Leopardstown (at the Dublin Racing Festival in February) his confidence level has come right back through the roof. Things didn’t go to plan today, they often don’t in these big fields, and we had to not panic and go to plan B but it’s worked out well. Plan A was to be handier. I gave him a squeeze and he winged the second last and the last. He’s an amazing little horse. He’s still a bit novicey and is still only a five-year-old. This winter went horribly for him, the ground went against him and things didn't work out. We pulled the plug, he had a lovely run when finishing second in a flat race in Tramore and this race was the plan. He likes Listowel and finished second in the Lartigue Hurdle last year but last Monday I was down here and we were debating whether to run, with all the rain that fell. We walked the track this morning and with fresh ground, decided to take our chance. He missed the break and we were hoping to be closer to the pace, but plan B came into operation and Cian didn't panic. Trainers make plans but jockeys have to be allowed use plan B and they are the ones who win races. He was brilliant, is based with Jessica Harrington and rides out for me in the afternoon. I think, eventually, we will have a crack at a nice Flat race somewhere along the line with Man O Work.

I could never get him into a good race with a light weight and it was the same on the Flat. He’d a proper weight on his back today and there was a good gallop which suited him. His (late) owner Jerry Nolan was a pure gentleman. I rode winners for him and having an owner like him, you couldn’t buy them. He was easy to train for. I thought the handicapper had this lad and I asked him to drop the horse a pound to get him into a 0-116, but it looks like he was right. The race cut up though - the favourite tipped up and it probably wasn't the strongest race. He is game, Mark (McDonagh) gave him a lovely ride and thanks to the McDonaghs who support me well and Lorraine (Mark McDonagh's mother) looks after the horses when they return home on breaks. I have to thank all the owners who all stood by me (during the suspension) as it was a tough end to the year. Colin said he was going to sit a bit closer and have one go at him (Broome). He felt he went too soon for him the last day and he felt he did again today. He has an electrifying turn of speed but lasted it out. It was a brilliant ride. He’s been a pleasure to train and doesn’t take a lot of work. There have been plenty of people interesting in buying him but thankfully the owners have kept faith in me as I felt he could win a Group One. I’ve had a number of horses placed in Guineas, and a fourth in the Epsom Derby, but that is my first Group One. I can die happy now!. They are so easy to train compared to jumpers. I’m thrilled and it means a lot.
