Basil’s Boy clearly enjoys undulating tracks as he powered home by seven and a half lengths in the Dr E.F. Logan OBE Memorial Giltspur Scientific Handicap hurdle at Downpatrick.

Eoin Walsh rode a patient race over an extended two miles five and delivered his mount to lead at the last. The six-year-old stayed on well to post a decisive victory at 7/2.

King’s Song took the runner-up berth at 66/1. Ya Boy Ya the 11/4 favourite, was another five lengths adrift in third.

Trainer Liam Cusack said: “He ran a lovely race in Tramore and the race didn’t really go to suit him — he got left in front and it was not ideal. But today they went a nicer gallop and he (Eoin Walsh) was able to get him relaxed.

“I was even wondering was he too far back, but he went wide and jumped his way into it.

“He can hit a flat spot, but the ground is probably a bit slow.

“He’s a handy bit of a horse and is after winning two and it’s great.

“We’ll see what the handicapper does.

“He likes the hills, I wonder would he handle Cheltenham!

“I’ve popped him over a fence and he pops a fence, so we’ll see. I’ll probably put him into a better race now off a lighter weight.”
