Harty Cup appreciated the testing ground conditions to land division two of the two-mile Cloneen Handicap Hurdle at Clonmel.

Trained by Robert Tyner for JP McManus, the Yeats gelding made a pleasing start in handicaps when fourth on the Thyestes Chase card at Gowran last month.

The five-year-old was supported from early morning quotes of 9/4 into evens favourite and headed the front-running Cry Before Dawn at the penultimate flight.

Mark Walsh ’s mount took control from before the last and stretched clear on the run-in to beat Falcon Park by six lengths, with Cry Before Dawn a further half a length back in third.

McManus’ racing manager Frank Berry said, “He ran well at Gowran when he stayed on nicely on deep ground, and he needs that ground. While the ground stays like that, he'll stay going in some of those handicaps.

"At the minute, he is fine at that distance in that ground."
